SS : Yours Sincerely, Murder Part 16

June 9, 2012

“Ok…she’s unconscious again…You did well to calm her…”

Arnav looked at his fragile wife…”You…you mean she was awake…?”

The doctor nodded…”Briefly…She heard you…and she relaxed…”

Tears fell from his eyes…”After everything that has happened, even after everything I have done to her, and she still trusts me…”

“Mr. Raizada…She strikes me as a very loving, and forgiving person…whatever you may have done in the past, I honestly don’t think she remembers it…and as for THIS…you didn’t do this to her…”

Arnav looked up with pleading eyes…”When…when will she wake up fully? I…I just need to see her eyes…I need to hear her voice…I’m…I’m dying myself here…”

“I understand, but you have to be patient with this type of situation…we don’t want her to develop post-op infections…I have just removed the breathing tube as she is coping quite well breathing on her own…the oxygen mask will stay on until she fully wakes up though…”

Arnav’s fingers fluttered around her hand…he was careful not to tug on the IV tubing dangling from her wrist.

He glanced at Khushi’s face…

She was pale, deathly pale…

Her lips were sallow, nasal folds as white as a fish belly, all signs of critical blood loss.

Beneath an oxygen cannula, a nasogastric tube emerged from her nostril, dark as an eel with blood and bile.

Three IVs and a unit of fresh frozen plasma hung from metal hooks overhead.

Arnav’s eyes slammed shut…but there was still no relief…

Images of Khushi’s blank eyes as she fell to the ground haunted him…

He could still see her blood stained clothes as they were cut to shreds as she lay on the operating table…

The sounds he had heard from the emergency room were like claws gashing his heart…

He tried not to gag or think about it, but the images would slam into him…

“Yes…She’s lost a lot of blood,” the doctor continued, “but we’re replacing it. And her vital signs are encouraging. . . .” he hesitated at his obvious discomfort. “Once she stabilizes, controlling infection will be the real battle. She . . . You . . . It will be a long haul for everyone.”

The doctor glanced away.

Pain jabbed again as he remembered that less than 24 hours ago, when he’d had her safe in his arms…

“Just keep talking to her, she can definitely hear you…she’s responding to your…”

“Wait…” Arnav said frantically…”She…She’s tightening her hold on me again…Is she…”

Arnav leaned over her to see a small wrinkle crease her nose…

“Speak to her, she may be waking up…take this…” the doctor passed Arnav a small lead with a button on it…”this is a medication pump, if she is in a great deal of pain, just push the button and it will instantly infuse analgesic into her veins.”

Arnav quickly took the lead and leaned closer to his wife…

“Khushi…” his breath was hot on her face…”Sweetheart…Khushi, I’m here…”

She turned her head slightly…

His heart was beating fiercely, “can you open your eyes for me? please…I miss your eyes so damn much…please Khushi…”

Slowly…

Slowly…

Her eyes opened…

‘…

Biting back emotional and physical pain, consciousness began to flood her senses…

Through a floating haze of morphine that kept the pain in her belly barely below screaming level, Khushi tried desperately to open her heavy eyes…

So bright…

Everything was too bright…

Her eyelids flickered slightly up into the fluorescent lighting…

Straining to turn her head to the side, she saw a blur of motion beyond the tangle of swaying IV bottles and plastic bags of blood…

She cringed slightly as the portable monitor beeped close to her ear…

Her senses perked even more as she heard voices echoing from an overhead speaker…

She breathed in…

Khushi instantly winced as the nasogastric tube tugged against her nostril.

She tried to clear her throat, only to have a grating stab of pain shoot down her body…

But before she could react, she heard it again.

That voice.

It calmed her.

It soothed her…

It said…”can you open your eyes for me? please…I miss your eyes so damn much…please Khushi…”

Slowly…

Slowly…

Her eyes opened…

Then a sob jolted free from Arnav’s throat…”Hi…” he said gently…

Khushi’s lips parted but she immediately flinched in pain…

“Easy…don’t say anything Khushi…just look at me…” Arnav soothed.

“Well Mrs. Raizada. Welcome back…I’ll just check your vitals…”

As the doctor spoke, Khushi’s heartbeat started to race, her hand tightened on Arnav’s, and her eyes shone with flecks of fear…

Arnav looked up at the doctor…”Quiet!”

Focusing all his attention on Khushi, he laid his hand gently on her cheek…”Khushi…Listen to me…You’re safe…I’m here with you…This is a doctor…he just wants to make sure you are okay…that’s all…I won’t let anyone hurt you…I promise…I promise…I’m right here…”

Her weak attempt at a grip, completely vanished as her body relaxed…

“That’s my girl…Just relax, I’m right here…”

The doctor checked her wound and Arnav felt a whirlwind of anger and hate pulse through him…

“That man…did… THAT to my wife…and unborn child…” his thoughts were reeling as he saw the extent of her injuries…

A wheezing sound came from Khushi’s mouth…

All Arnav’s attention came back to her in an instant.

“Shhh…don’t try to talk yet…just look at me…keep your eyes on mine…”

Blinking slowly, Khushi complied…

Her mind was desperately trying to think…”So this was the voice I heard…but…but who is he?”
