SS : Memories Part 7

November 4, 2012

Arnav watched  with a mixture of pride and concern as Khushi stormed out…
Proud that she still had the guts to stand up to him…
But concerned that she was afraid while doing it…
The woman who had badmouthed Khushi, turned away and tried to quietly walk away…
“STOP…”
The woman froze.
“Did you accuse Miss Gupta of trying to seduce me?”
She turned to face him, but couldn’t make eye contact…she merely nodded.
“Say it then!”
The staff were in awe…
Arnav Singh Raizada had NEVER stood up for anyone…
Let alone a WOMAN.
“I said that…I said…that she…she…”
Arnav paced forwards…
“SHE has the highest moral character out of EVERYONE in this building! If I hear that anyone has spoken ill of her again, then I won’t hesitate to fire each and every one of you…”
Arnav stared long and hard at the room full of his employees…
Each with the same startled expression on their face…
“DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR!?” Arnav’s voice boomed throughout the room…
The room echoed with muffled “Yes Sir’s” as he scowled and left the room in a barrage of anger.
…………………………
Khushi immersed herself in her work…
Editing…
Proofreading…
Typing…
And still there was more being sent over…
Looking at the growing pile of files at her desk, she began to get angry…
“I come here for a job….simple…I don’t want to get in anyone’s way…and then the whole office begins to accuse me, the boss himself HATES me and yet KISSES me, and now…now because I stood up for myself, he is inundating me with work! I’ll never get all this done today…”
Arnav smirked as he saw her getting more and more frustrated…
“That’s right Khushi…come and tell me that you can’t finish it all…”
10 minutes…
20 minutes…
The staff began to clock out and go home…
Arnav stood up and threw his jacket on…”Hard headed woman!”
Stomping down the stairs, he noticed that she ignored his entry…
“Miss Gupta…This office is now closed. I am NOT paying for overtime! If you didn’t get all your work done then you will have to say so.”
Khushi stopped writing.
Putting her pen down, she got to her feet and slowly looked up…
“I never back down on tasks that have been assigned to me. If you are saying that you are leaving now, then fine. I will bring this work home with me and finish it there. It will be completed by tomorrow.”
Arnav’s blood boiled…
He remembered this feeling…
Locking horns with someone as determined as himself…
Inwardly raging at her insolence…
Her unwillingness to concede…
No longer sure if he was furious or turned on, he screamed out to Aman, who quickly came rushing in…
“Take Miss Gupta’s work, and put it in my car. She’ll be finishing it by tomorrow…”
Khushi felt a slight sense of power…”And I won this one Mr. Raizada…”
Arnav turned away and stormed out of the building calling back to her…”Get your things and hurry. Di will have prepared dinner and I am won’t let her sit waiting for us…”
…………………..
“Chote! Finally…” Anjali smiled and hugged her brother, then turned to hug Khushi…
“Anjaliji, would you mind very much if I ate in my room? I have a lot of work to finish and I want to get started straight away…”
Stunned, Anjali’s eyes darted back to Arnav…”You…You are making her do more work!? Chote!”
“No no…I couldn’t finish it…and I wanted to bring it…I chose to…”
Arnav half smiled and nodded…
As Aman brought in two boxes full of files, Khushi ushered him in the right direction and pointed to her room…”Just leave them outside the door…”
“I’ll go and start…” Khushi smiled briefly and hurried away…
As soon as she was out of hearing distance, Anjali’s eyes turned wild…
Smacking Arnav on the arm, she practically growled…”What are you doing!!!? The poor girl’s mind is already overactive! Now you give her TOO MUCH work to handle!?”
Arnav remained silent and began walking away…
Wandering back into the kitchen, Payal instantly noted the vacant reaction on Anjali’s face…
“What’s happened? Are you okay?”
Slumping against the bench, she nodded…”They are going to drive US mad…”
Smiling, Payal asked…”What have they knocked heads about now?”
………………..
Arnav climed the stairs two at a time and saw Khushi on her knees trying to push the heavy boxes into her room…
“Yeah, you’re off to a great start…”
Wanting to let his smartass comment slide, she stood up and held onto the sides of the door and lifted her foot to push the boxes…
Arnav felt like laughing at her stubborness…
He quickly dropped his briefcase into his room and changed into some casual clothes…
Heading back out, ready to have dinner, he approached Khushi’s room…
As he rounded the corner, he saw her…
Sitting in the hallway…
On the floor…
Surrounded by papers…
“What the!”
She looked up and scowled…”Well you didn’t offer to help, and I couldn’t move them, so I will work right here…”
Making a slightly disgusted face, he walked forwards…
Arnav saw her reaching for a certain file and purposefully stepped on it, making her unable to free it…
She felt her control start to slip…
Holding onto the file, she calmly said…”Excuse me, I need this…MOVE…”
“You are making a mess of my house, and disrupting my office. Clean this up, and move it into your room! I don’t care if you have to take one file at a time!”
Snapping her head up, she stared long and hard into his cold eyes…
Releasing her grip on the papers, Khushi jumped to her feet…
“How DARE you! What kind of person are you!? Don’t you have a single care in your heart for anyone!?! Isn’t it enough that I’m TRYING to fit in! I’m TRYING to do all the work you assign me with!”
Arnav shrugged his shoulders…”You were the one who brought it home…to MY house…in MY hallway…” he paused, leaning in close that their noses almost touched…”So YOU have to TRY and deal with the environment…”
Feeling furious, Khushi spun around and was about to storm into her room when she slipped on all the paperwork that layered the floor…
Letting out a quick shriek, she felt herself falling backwards…
Arnav hadn’t moved.
He saw her stand up in fury.
Heard her lash out in anger.
And finally, saw her slip and fall back…straight into his arms…
Khushi’s arms were flailing around as she assumed that THIS time, Arnav wouldn’t catch her…
But within seconds, she was being held tight in his arms as her fingers clutched tightly to his shirt…
Arnav saw her eyes clamped shut…
Her breathing was rapid…
And he realized…”She really thought I’d let her fall…”
As Khushi’s lids slowly flickered open, small tears fell out from the corners eyes…
Arnav instantly felt pain…strong pain…HER pain…
“Khushi…”
She quickly struggled free from his embrace and moved back to create distance between them…
He saw the tempest of her anger roll across her eyes, her lips were pressing together as though trying to prevent herself from unleashing her thoughts that were no doubt things that would make him furious again.
“Khushi, look…I didn’t mean…”
She didn’t wait for the rest, but spun on her heel and slammed through the door into her room…
He chased after her, stopping just behind her…
“Don’t you DARE walk away when I am talking to you!”
His words came to an abrupt halt, and she slowly turned around…
With hands fisted at his sides and his wide shoulders heaving, he looked feral and dangerous.
Shivers ran down her spine and goose bumps raised over the flesh of her arms…
Even when seething angry, this man affected her on the basest of levels, and it both thrilled and frustrated her.
When he started to stalk toward her with a menacing gleam in his eye, Khushi wondered if he was going to hurt her or yell at her more…
Her back hit the wall behind her and her fear spiked…
She knew should probably apologize, should say something, anything, but words failed her as she stared up into the eyes of a man with one purpose in mind….
His demeanor was positively animalistic, and it sure as hell wasn’t of the cute and cuddly kind.
He closed in further and she shook her head, sections of her hair slapping against her cheeks as she saw him slam his palms against the wall on either side of her head…
Hot tears began to spill over her cheeks…“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
He imprisoned her gaze with a stare so intense she was helpless to look away, and when he spoke, his words were razor-sharp.
“Look into my eyes…”
As she stared, she caught a glimpse inside his heart…
“He’s hurting…” she thought…”More specifically, the softer side of him…The side that made him a thoughtful best friend…The side that always stood up for her and protected her against anyone…The side that wanted to help her…and offer her happiness…”
Arnav could see her really and truly thinking…
“His fighter half is taking over, fortifying his defenses with harsh and crass attitudes in an effort to disguise his wounds. But though it might be the fighter’s words pouring from him, it’s my best friend’s feelings behind them… ” she smiled softly as her thoughts continued…”He has always had such a  duality of his nature…”
“She MUST be recalling something…” Arnav hoped…”PLEASE recall something!”
Confidence settled over him as he framed her face with his hands…
Arnav quietly breathed her name…”Khushi…”
Surprise flickered in her eyes and as she floated back to the moment, she became acutely aware of how close he was…
“Arnavji…” she whispered…
His gaze widened at the sound of her voice…”She’s remembered something!!!!!” screamed his mind…
That moment, reality shot through her and she was thrown into shock…
Her head pounded…
Her vision became blurry…
Arnav could see her amnesic mask slipping back over her…
Whatever memory she had, was frightening her…
Or maybe, the fact that she WAS remembering, was frightening her…
“Khushi…It’s me…It’s ME…Please try and remember!”
But she didn’t hear him…she fell forwards into his arms, fainting…
PRECAP-

Khushi had been quite successful in avoiding him all day…

The office staff had also been leaving her alone…

When the first morning break arrived she quickly went to get a coffee and hurried back to her desk…

But as she did, she thought…”I don’t want to be alone at my desk, where HE might come over to me…”

Decided, she spun around…

Her sudden reverse in direction took at least one person by surprise: Arnav.
She barrelled into him.
Arnav couldn’t reverse in time as Khushi’s hand shook from the collision, and she watched in horror as her coffee splashed across his shirt.
It was like watching a train wreck.
Her hand flew to her mouth as her nerves began to tighten in fear…
